Opening doors through opportunity

When a 13-year-old girl was released from a shelter and reunited with her sponsor in February 2025, she stepped into a world filled with both uncertainty and possibility. Everything around her was new—the language, the culture, the school system, and the expectations of daily life in a country she was still learning to understand. Yet despite the challenges, she carried something powerful with her: determination.

Starting seventh grade meant walking into classrooms where she knew no one and often understood only part of what was being said. Rather than retreating, she leaned in. She practiced English every chance she could, whether during lunch, in group projects, or through conversations with classmates. Day after day, her confidence grew. Teachers noticed her perseverance, her curiosity, and the excitement she showed each time she mastered a new concept or successfully communicated in a language that once felt unfamiliar.

Urban Strategies helped make that progress possible. Through Post-Release Services, the family received support navigating school enrollment and connecting to educational resources that could help her succeed long term. Those connections provided more than access to school—they helped create a pathway toward future opportunities, including programs designed to support college and career readiness.

Today, she is building a future that once may have seemed out of reach. Mathematics has become her favorite subject. Sports have helped her find community and confidence. She dreams of one day becoming a civil engineer and attending university. Her story is a reminder that when young people are surrounded by support, encouragement, and opportunity, resilience can become achievement—and a difficult transition can become the beginning of something extraordinary.
