Connecting Through Culture

Access to services begins with understanding. Yet for many Haitian families navigating complex systems, language can become an invisible barrier that prevents them from fully benefiting from the support available to them. Recognizing this challenge, Urban Strategies expanded its capacity in 2024 by welcoming Haitian Creole-speaking case managers and translating critical documents, creating new pathways for families to engage confidently in the services designed to support them.

For one family, the impact was immediate. Prior to being connected with a Creole-speaking case manager, communication relied largely on translators, and important information about available services had not fully reached the sponsor. During an introductory call conducted in her native language, the sponsor became emotional as she realized there were resources and opportunities she had never understood were available. With forms translated, processes clearly explained, and ongoing support provided in Creole, the family was able to access educational opportunities, secure long-awaited dental care, receive Medicaid assistance, and navigate other essential services with confidence.

Another family had experienced similar frustrations. Although they had participated in post-release services before, language barriers had limited the effectiveness of that support. When a Creole-speaking case manager reached out and explained the program in the family's preferred language, the sponsor immediately recognized the difference. For the first time, services felt accessible, relevant, and responsive to the family's needs. Trust was established more quickly, communication improved, and the family became more fully engaged in the support available to them.

These stories illustrate a simple but powerful truth: culturally responsive services are not an enhancement—they are essential. When families can communicate in their own language, ask questions freely, and receive information in ways that reflect their lived experience, barriers begin to fall. Urban Strategies' investment in linguistic and cultural responsiveness is helping ensure that more families are not only served, but truly understood, empowered, and connected to the opportunities they need to thrive.
